Left me wanting more
After having listened to Karma many, many times, the novelty of a new Rick Springfield CD has worn off and I'm left wanting more. More guitars, more drums, more up-beat songs.... uou get the idea. I appreciate the fact that Rick has grown up and matured and wanted his new music to reflect this, but his mature singing songwriting just isn't fun anymore. Don't get me wrong, the music sounds great. It just isn't the Rick Springfield that I had come to know and enjoy.I,too, have matured and have grown up, but I still like to have fun when I'm listening to music. I like loud and fast guitars, with the trade mark Rick vocals that rocked us all in the 80's. Why did he think that he had to slow down so much to let us know how he feels in the 90's? Of course, it's great to have new music from Rick, but it's just too bad that it puts me to sleep. I suppose I can always put on Living In Oz when I want to rock. I'll listen to Karma when I'm tired and want to take a nap.I hope that Rick will put out at least one more CD before hanging it up. Maybe the next release will be the real rock and roll CD that Karma should, and could have been.Any real fan of Rick Springfield will have already picked up Karma. It's a nice addition to a Rick Springfield collection. But it won't be your favorite CD. That one has yet to be made.
Awesome lyrics; an absolutely terrific CD
Having never listened to Rick Springfield before, I'd watched a VH1 'Behind the Music' segment on him and was impressed by the image of the man. I saw "Karma" in the record store a few weeks later and bought it. Was I amazed! I can only say that this isn't a CD that completely gets you the first time you listen...or the second... It's only when you've listened enough to really familiarize yourself with the lyrics that you realize what amazing material this is. His lyrics are second to none, and I'm just amazed that he continues to get the kind of 'critique' from critics who obviously haven't taken the time to listen....really listen...to the songs here. "Shock to My System" would grab onto a whole new generation of fans--it's a hot, hot song. And "It's Always Something,' "Free," "In Veronica's Head," -- wow! I love this CD...and I recommend it to anyone I can. Thanks, Rick...you have a solid new fan here.
Purchased After A Concert High
Back in 2000, I saw Rick Springfield in concert on his Karma tour. I'll admit it: I went only because I'm an 80's girl and who doesn't know Rick was the man in the 80's! After "experiencing" Rick live, I was blown away. The man puts on an awesome show. I left there totally psyched and wanted to get my hands on all things Rick. Since I had a lot of his older stuff, I figured I'd pick this one up. I love this album! I think it shows a much more mature Rick, but at the same time it keeps with his pop/dance sound. I like all the songs on here. Do yourself a favor and go out and buy this. You won't regret it.
The
I am a proud owner of this CD.If you are a Rick Springfield fan there is nothing on here that will change your mind. Its not the 80s Jessies Girl sound but he's been moving further away from that with each release. My favorite song is It's Always Something.Don't we all think that at least 2o times a day.I recommend it
I was very excited to hear a new Rick CD after a 10 year hiautus, with the exception of his group collaboration "Sahara Snow" released in 1997 (excellent CD, by the way, with 2 great songs written by Rick alone). But it was a very different sound than he had ever created before. Almost every piece has an acoustic base to it, loop percussion, and slide guitar riffs dominate throughout. The bonus track is the only song that brings out Rick's usual recipe for songwriting that most fans crave for. If I had to pick any songs to listen to other than the bonus, they would be "Prayer" and "Ordinary Girl". "Prayer" has a great melody and "Ordinary Girl" has the passion and sound with less slide guitar and organ (which is present in every song). The lyrics on this CD are great. Rick's voice is as passionate as ever. He shows once again that he is an extemely talented artist. But, this style of music doesn't work for me (from Rick or any other artist). My feel: this CD is ultimately one long electronic-acoustic, country song with forced vocals. On a better note, it's an effort of what Rick was feeling at the time. We all have our moods. If you're a huge Rick fan, like me, you'll want this CD anyway. There's something for almost everyone on it (except "live" drums!!!).
Rick Springfield made pretty good pop-rock radio fodder in his early-'80s heyday; "Jessie's Girl," "I've Done Everything for You," and "Love Is Alright Tonight" are hard to argue with now, even if you didn't have much use for them when they were hits. Unfortunately, this former
General Hospital
star has happened upon enlightenment and feels the need to share it with the world. True feeling seems to lie behind "It's Always Something" (a tribute not to Gilda Radner, but to Springfield's late father), "Act of Faith," and the rest, but the shiny, slightly dated production and soap-ready emoting make
Karma
less interesting than a thrift-store copy of
Working Class Dog
.
