Hard Core or not...this is a great cd!
P.S. is not suppose to be Toad's greatest hits album.(thus according to Toad the Wet Sprocket). It's suppose to be Toad's favorite songs, hence the title "A retrospective". I am not a hard core fan by any means. I only have one other Toad CD, "Acoustic Dance Party"(Which I highly recommend). There are really good songs on here, one of which I might have heard before, but I'm not sure...anyway now it is my new favorite toad song. It's "Crazy Life". This cd also has the staples of toad, "come down", "all I want", "something's always wrong", "walk on the ocean", and "fall down". One of the songs that was previously unrealeased "Silo lullaby" is another great song, especially before bed time. Overall this is an exceptional cd. I would highly recommend it. It's too bad that toad is no longer together to bring out more great music! Buy this cd, you won't be disappointed.
This one's for the masses
You may not have ever heard of Toad the Wet Sprocket in your life, but I guarantee you that if you listen to the radio regularly, you will have heard at least one (and likely more) of their songs before. "Walk on the Ocean", "All I Want", and "Good Intentions" (which has been aired on the show 'Friends') are just a few of the songs you may have heard on the radio without knowing the band who made them possible. What this CD does is combine all the hits, so people can get all the songs they've heard without having to shell out loads of money on all the albums. This CD is for the masses--the ones who didn't want to buy any past albums just for one catchy song or two. TTWS is a great band and this is a great starting point for casual fans. All the hits are here...so it's well worth the investment.
Mmm... Not So Much Greatest Hits.
OK, so Toad The Wet Sprocket will never be a Jennifer Lopez or Britney Spears. They never hit #1. They never even made the Top 10 (their biggest hit "All I Want" got to #15). But, they took their 4 Top 40 hits ("All I Want", "Walk On The Ocean", "Fall Down" and "Good Intentions"... as an aside "Something's Always Wrong" came depressingly close, peaking at #41) and added the rest of their singles and some absolute necessities, both from major label days and minor label days and made it into an album. I've seen reviews where it's been said that "they don't have enough greatest hits" -- but it doesn't SAY "Greatest Hits" on the packaging, now does it?The result is a great panoramic view of their body of work. The new songs "Eyes Open Wide" and the previously only available online song "Silo Lullaby" are fantastic songs (as well as the previously rare "PS" for which the album is named). "Eyes Open Wide" is a great full-band slow song, while "Silo Lullaby" incorporates a lot of strings into a gorgeous ballad. Some people call it a weird song, but I've never found anything weird about it. It's one of their best creations.
Toad is a band that a lot of people tend to forget about, considering they were out in the days of the Gin Blossoms and bands that were similar that had bigger hits. But, I still think Toad is in a class by themselves. They proved themselves to have radio-friendly hits and still have a rabid fanbase 7 years after their last studio album -- judging from the fact that I wanted to see them on the reunion tour and the blasted thing sold out in my area before I could secure tickets.
Toad The Wet Sprocket is the band that I will credit with being the first band I was seriously into. This is the album you should start with if you want to be seriously into them as well... then start getting their full-releases. I'd recommend "Dulcinea" for a lot of haunting songs.
Undiscovered rarities!
"PS A Toad Retrospective" is somewhat an album for the fans only. It is a farewll bid for the band who rose to stardom in their late teens and early twenties writing about experiences about God, broken relationships, love and faith. In this particular compilation, you couldn't ask for more as enhanced hits from back then include "All I Want", my all time favorite and reminds me of dark times "Something's Always Wrong", the upbeat "Good Intentions" and the perfect rock alternative offerings from the 1997's "Coil" album is also included such as "Come Down" and "Whatever I Fear" are great tracks off the selection. Unreleased songs such as "PS" and "Silo Lullaby" are so tearful and really exudes too much emotion. Glen Phillips has a voice of an angel. It's a good thing they reunited and has done a gig recently and I hope that they will all come back together and put a very modern "Toad The Wet Sprocket". That would be nice. Get their early albums> "Pale", "Dulcinea", and "Coil" are the best choices! Get all their albums! It's worth every penny!!!
Thoughts from a TRUE fan
Toad the Wet Sprocket ROCKS! And so does P.S. Containing all their best songs from their begining (Way Away) to their end (Silo Lulaby). It is now my favourite Toad cd, how could it not. Sure Silo Lulaby is a little weird. But it was needed to end this cd, not to mention a beautiful addition once you get used to it. For those of you that don't understand, you need to listen to Toad better. It is the perfect retrospective. If you don't already own it, buy it. If you do own it, treasure it and listen to it at least once daily.
