Stay On These Roads Reviews
New Direction
With the 'Stay On These Roads' album a-ha began a venture into a new direction. The 80's pop sound was a good but eventual ephemeral one. You can feel and hear a sound that is in transition from Pop to Rock on this album, yet the overall sound is somewhere in between the two making this album a rather curious oddity. You get the impression that they were being pulled in two directions. 'The Blood That Moves The Body' and 'Stay On These Roads' are examples of this. Even the title of the album can be interpreted as a question and suggests wonder for what may lay ahead. Yet they still meld lyric, melody and their unique sound into something that transcends the definition of music in whatever manner they perform. My favorite song on this album is 'The Living Daylights' originally written for the James Bond film. In 1987 Paul Waaktaar was commissioned to compose the theme for the James Bond film with the John Barry. Due to rumored disagreements between a-ha and Barry, two versions of 'The Living Daylights' were recorded, one for the movie soundtrack and the version heard on this album. I really like this one and I think it is the highlight of the album.
Atmospheric and catchy.
Stay on These Roads is another good album from A-ha. I find this third album to be just as satisfying as the two earlier releases. All ten of the tracks are listenable. The album's musicianship, production, and songwriting are worthy. Stay on These Roads is very similar in style to the previous albums. It's a synth pop album without much guitar playing. Their keyboard work throughout is nice--it's quite atmospheric. A-ha's keyboard playing has always impressed me. The singing is also cool. The songs that I like the most are "The Blood That Moves the Body," "The Living Daylights," and "Touchy!" "The Living Daylights" is one of my favorite songs from A-ha--it's very catchy and well-written. Stay on These Roads is pretty solid. It's an enjoyable disc. The album cover is cool, too. Worth a listen.
A Must-Have for the a-ha Fan
This is one of my all-time favorite albums, simply because its title track blows my mind every time I listen to it. And I've been listening to it for over a decade now. "Stay on These Roads" makes this album worth every penny. Trust me.
Dropping the ball
There were high hopes for this album coming out after SCOUNDREL DAYS. Hopes were dashed as it opened with a truckload of synthesizers and whatnots. At first listen the album drags from beginning to end. After multiple listens, certain tunes can be picked out for future listenings, but all in all, this is a snoozer. The song trying to be the hit single "Touchy" only succeeded in being annoying. There was something quite interesting in this collection, however. The closing song "You'll End Up Crying" comes across as some sort of new wave Barber Shop song. It was a pleasant surprise. Other high points include: "The Living Daylights", "This Alone is Love" and "Hurry Home".
pop classic
Ok, it's hardly current and people have been sneering at this band ever since "Take on Me" fell finally out of the top 40. Nonetheless, their curious lyrical twists, semi-electro melodies and most of all Morten Harket's ethereal, hollow-sounding, choirboy voice was, and still is, clear as a waterglass note. This album, more than any of their others, contains the songs which showcase his voice and it's emotive overtones to its best. Also contains some damn good tunes.
